Art has no rules whereas design only has one: does it achieve its purpose or not?
Defining the purpose in question is the foundation of every design.

While art often is associated with an emotional aspect in its consumption, design is a rather rational process. The ones creating and both benefiting from purposeful design are people, not machines. This is why design always will have a human touch, an emotional charge to it – may it be by the creator or the consumer or both.
Artistic media design embraces this humanness and not only tolerates but purposely adds the aspect of individual perception and emotion to its rational base. The goal is to achieve a desired emotion through strategic design choices.
